Each time the prison nurses ran out of Tim Hinkhouse's meds, he filed a grievance. After they found out he is excellent at articulating himself when writing complaints, they took him and his health issues seriously.
"My life seems easier living with an open mind than when I closed myself off to others who choose to live their lives differently from mine," Tim Hinkhouse explains. "Please don't think for one second that I won't accept you."
On his birthday, Tim Hinkhouse reflects on his road to staying well while incarcerated. "Being in prison can bring dark and lonely feelings," he says. "How you choose to deal with those feelings determines how strong a person you really are."
