Joseph McGowan, M.D., F.A.C.P.

Dr. McGowan is an associate professor of medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and an attending physician at North Shore University Hospital. He has served as the medical director for North Shore University Hospital's Center for AIDS Research and Treatment since 2003. Dr. McGowan has been deeply involved in HIV research for over a decade. Since 1997 he has served as principal investigator for over two dozen clinical trials. He has also authored more than 30 journal articles and has contributed to several books on infectious disease. His primary research interests are HIV in people over 50 and the treatment of pregnant women with HIV. In 1990 he was awarded the Leo M. Davidoff Society Award for Excellence in Teaching of Medical Students, and in 2008 he was named Attending Physician of the Year at North Shore University Hospital. A native New Yorker, Dr. McGowan graduated from Columbia University summa cum laude in 1983 and attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He completed his post-graduate training in internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. In 1990 he became a clinical fellow in infectious diseases at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Subsequently, he has also completed National Institutes of Health research fellowships in infectious diseases and immunology.
