Dear Mr. Sowadsky,
Do people who have an existing STD (herpes, clap...) test positive sooner after being infected than those people who dont have an STD? I've often heard this to be the case.
Thank you for your question. Generally speaking, having another STD would not normally affect HIV antibody tests, and would not normally cause people to show positive on an HIV test sooner (or later) than those without an STD.
However, let me point out that if a person has HIV, this may sometimes affect tests for certain other STDs (for example syphilis tests). So if you have HIV, and you are being tested for other STDs, it is important that you tell the doctor or clinic of your HIV status.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to call the Centers for Disease Control at 1.800.232.4636 (Nationwide).
