Question

Since starting my antiretroviral therapy, I have had quite the substantial weight gain. I've NEVER weighed this much in my life ever. I excercise, eat healthy, and no matter what I do the weight just keeps on coming. It's starting to really affect my life. I found out about a drug called Phentermine. It sounds like what I need. Could you please tell me what your professional opinion is on this?

Appreciated

Answer

Phentermine has been used to treat weight gain but the data supporting its safety and efficacy are not very comforting with a complete lack (to my knowledge) of safety, efficacy, and drug interaction data in the setting of HIV treatment. A medical evaluation including hormone tests, which HIV drugs could be contributing (? any switch as a possibility), and diet/nutrition assessment would be generally recommended before consideration of a drug intervention.KH
