I take Tdf/ 3Tc/Efv and am not gaining weight...my VL is LDL. How can I gain weight? Please help.
There are several potential reasons why someone living with undetectable HIV viral load may not be gaining weight: not eating enough, engaging in too much exercise or activity, diarrhea, or hormone imbalances.
Here are some suggestions for gaining weight:
1- Make your breakfast the largest meal, followed by a medium size lunch and a small dinner. People who skip breakfast have a higher chance to gain weight and have insulin resistance. Eating a large dinner can make you fat, disrupt your sleep and lower your morning appetite. Minimize soft drinks, sweets, refined flour and maximize fiber, protein and olive oil.
2- Do not go hungry or thirsty. Eat small protein-rich snacks every 3 hours like nuts, hummus with multigrain crackers, cheese with apples/celery, etc. Drink water through the day (if you are thirsty you are dehydrated!). Proper water consumption and snacks will prevent binge eating later during the day and will keep your blood sugar, insulin and energy more stable.
3- Talk to your doctor about getting tested for testosterone (total and free) and your TSH, Free T4 and free T3 (thyroid hormone). Talk to your doctor about increasing your hormone levels if they are low since low T and hyperthyrodism can make you lose weight.
