Take Action! Tell Cass County Sheriff HIV Is Not a Crime

HIV stigma is hard at work in Cass County, Michigan, where Corey Rangel's privacy was invaded by law enforcement officers who called contacts from his phone inquiring as to whether they had been intimately involved with him. In this disturbing case of law enforcement overreach fueled by HIV stigma and lack of education on current science, there is no complainant accusing Mr. Rangel of exposure or transmission of HIV, yet his positive status was enough to provoke this egregious invasion of privacy. Read more here.

Yesterday, Mr. Rangel went back to court; a protest took place outside the courthouse, calling for law enforcement and the criminal justice system to stop the witch hunt and treat Mr. Rangel fairly. (See local media coverage of the protest here.) Support is needed immediately for legal fees! You can donate here.

Keep the pressure on! Tweet your concerns with #FreeCorey to the Sheriff @CassSheriff or to Michigan's leading news source, MLive at @MLive or to local newspaper Leader Publications at @LeaderPub.
