Severity of ARS / Progression

Question

Dear Doctor

I have read various sources that state that the more severe the ARS symptons are, the worse the prognosis is for HIV+ patient. I recently seroconverted and experienced severe ARS including enchaephalitis that lasted for 6 weeks. However my CD4 count at 14 weeks p/exp is 630/35 viral load undetectable ... what is your opinion ?

Answer

Earlier studies suggested that more severe symptoms during ARS were correlated with higher viral loads at the end of 1-2 years after infection. The inference then being that higher viral loads after seroconversion correlate with a faster time to AIDS or death. Most of this data was derived during a time when we had very little treatment options, and thus represented natural history data. Your current CD4 count and viral load would suggest very good immune control of the virus. MH
