Question

I was tested positive for syphisis with Rpr titer 1:64, whereas my TPHA titer ism 1:2560. What does this mean? I am on Doxy antibiotics. Will this be the right course of treatment?

Answer

The tests measure slightly different things so it is to be expected that the titers for these tests would be different. They are not necessarily and indication of disease severity. They are useful for following a treatment response. We would expect at least a 4-fold (4 times) reduction in titer. They may not ever become zero even with appropriate treatment. Penicillin is usually the first drug of choice and Doxycyline is an accepted alternative. Dose and duration are determined by stage of disease.
