Dear Dr. Feinberg,
Could you please answer this question in the absence of Dr. Reznik? (Because it is about oral manifestations of HIV.) Is mild red band gingivitis (linear gingival erythema) a definite sign of HIV? Does it occur in HIV-negative people? How common is it?
Gingivitis can happen to anyone-- it's just inflammation or infection of the gums. It's very common.
