pregnancy and cd4 count

Question

I understand that pregnancy affects a woman's immune system. Is it therefore, possible that one's cd4 count can drop during pregnancy when one is not on meds.

Answer

Pregnancy is associated with subtle immunological changes. During pregnancy the absolute CD4 Count may decrease initially and then increase later in the pregnancy. The magnitude and the direction[ increase versus decrease ] of the absolute CD4 count during pregnancy is highly variable and not particularly predictable by any other clinical factor. The percentage of CD4 cells is stable during pregnancy and this measurement should be taken into account when one is concerned about a change in the HIV clinical stage. JLS.
