WNEP-TV reported that Pennsylvania state health officials have suspended a dentist in Shamokin after finding that he did not follow appropriate procedures to clean, disinfect, or sterilize the tools in his office. Investigators found no evidence of instrument sterilization after June 2013, and also said that the dentist did not have an active contract to dispose of medical waste. Investigators additionally said that complicating matters, the dentist kept poor records, so they do not know how long ago problems may have begun or who they should contact. While there are no reports of individuals being infected, health officials are recommending that current or former patients be screened for hepatitis B and C and HIV. Patients can call (877) PA-HEALTH Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for information and assistance with finding testing options.
