Neutrophilia - degenerating white blood cells

Question

My son was recently diagnosed with HIV and they are doing blood work now.In the process of al this they have found neutraphil bands and his white blood cells are degenerating. They have no idea what is causing this and I wondered if you could give me some info on this. The doctor says he may have been born with it.I cant find much info on neutrophil.Maybe you could point me in the right direction?

  Thank You

Answer

You haven't given me enough specific medical information for me to begin to sort this out. "Neutrophilia" means too many white blood cells, and "bands" are just immature forms of white blood cells. With infections, it is common to see both. Neither of these terms suggests "degenerating" white blood cells. If his doctors are confused, they should involve a blood specialist (hematologist).
