NAT vs PCR ?

Question

Dear Doc

Is NAT (Nucleic Acid Testing) the same as PCR RNA Testing such as Roche Amplicor ?

Answer

Could be. The NAT term is usually reserved for the testing that occurs in blood banks for screening donor blood. NAT can be performed using various technologies. NAT is also used for other viruses such as HCV. However, it is perfectly acceptable to use the designation when speaking about PCR HIV RNA testing.
