I have been reading your posts regularly and I must admit, you are an inspiration. I thank you for the service you are providing! I had a potentially ignorant question :-). I am very careful when I have sex and always use protection. I am also a nail biter. Although I don't bite to the point that my fingers are profusely bleeding, but I sometimes get small cuts and bruises around my cuticles. About three nights ago I had an encounter where I inserted my finger into a woman's anus that might have had some vaginal fluids around the area. I obviously didn't know her HIV status. Could this be a point of concern? I have been worrying myself to pieces thinking about it. Your expert answer would be eternally appreciated and big donation on the way.
Thanks in advance, Nail Biter :-)
Hello Mr. Biter,
Let me guess, you've now made yourself so anxious and worried that you are biting your nails down to the knuckle, right? Relax Max. Your HIV risk is nonexistent, if the skin was intact. Even if you had some small self-inflicted wounds from chewing your nails, your risk would be extremely remote at best. If you're worried, get a single rapid HIV test at the three-month mark. The result will undoubtedly be negative, but this may be the most efficient and effective way to put your largely unwarranted worries permanently to rest.
Thanks for your tax-deductible donation to the Robert James Frascino AIDS Foundation (www.concertedeffort.org). It's warmly appreciated. In return I'm sending my good-luck karma that your definitive three-month HIV test is negative. (I'm quite confident it will indeed be negative.) Good luck.
