|The deadly silence surrounding HIV/AIDS must end. Nearly 900,000 people in the United States are infected with HIV. It is an epidemic that affects us all.|
Around the world, more than 33 million people are estimated to be living with HIV or AIDS today, and 9 out of 10 of them DO NOT KNOW they are infected. At least half of new infections occur among young people under the age of 25.
We have the power -- and the responsibility -- to make a difference. The theme of this year's World AIDS Day is "AIDS -- End the Silence. Listen, Learn, Live!" To end the silence about HIV/AIDS, we must work together to promote open communication. We must educate our young people and get them involved in educating each other about strategies to prevent the spread of this devastating illness.
Our words and above all OUR ACTIONS, can reverse the course of the epidemic. Together we can defeat HIV/AIDS but only if we end the silence, start talking openly about HIV/AIDS, and get everyone involved in prevention.
