Maternal HIV-antibodies

Question

Hello, We have a one year old adoptive son from Africa whose biological mother was HIV+. His PCR HIV tests have repetedly been neg-, but is still giving a + result on the maternal HIV-antibodies. How long can the antibodies be found in his blood, should I be worried? Thank You

Answer

In most cases the maternal antibodies disappear within a year, but in some cases this can be longer. The exact time is difficult to determine.
