Life expectancy of an HIV positive person on treatment

Question

How many years does an HIV positive patient on HIV treatment survive?

Answer

That depends on many individual factors including current age (hard to expect a 60 year old to live 40 more years), other factors (use of IV drugs or presence of hepatitis C/smoking et cetera), and success of HIV treatment (suppressed virus and CD4 count > 500). One study predicted a 37-38 year survival for a non IV drug using 20 year old starting HIV therapy. Another study from France predicted near normal life expectancy for persons suppressed on HIV treatment > 2 years and CD4 counts > 500. Those predictions assume excellent adherence and access to current standards of care HIV meds and health care. KH
