HTLV False positive

After donating blood regularly for over 20 years I received a letter informing me that I am permanently deferred. In July 2009 and April 2010, my blood tested positive for the presence of antibody to HTLV I/II. After the April 2010 test, confimatory testing was done using IF Western blot which came back negative. Also 3 blood donations did not test positive between July 2009 and April 2010.

It is my understanding based on the negative Western Blot that I do not have HTLV. Do I need further testing to confirm this? Are my blood donating days over? If so, why do people who are documented as 'false positive HTLV' barred from blood donation?

You may need more testing and would likely benefit from an infectious disease expert reviewing your case.
