Can antidepressants affect the HIV antibody test?
To my knowledge there are no studies in the literature about the impact of various antidepressants on HIV testing results. There is no reason, however, to conclude that they would affect the results. In well over several decades of HIV testing I am unaware of any such cases.
If you have been prescribed an antidepressant it is very important that you take it as directed. Many of these drugs take several weeks to achieve therapeutic blood levels and consequently, stopping them will most likely take several weeks before any negative mood effects are felt. By that time, someone could be in real trouble.
Always consult with your healthcare provider about your concerns and, in my opinion, continue taking your antidepressants with the assurance that they will not interfere with your HIV test results.
