Hi I would just like to know if it's OK to only take Bactrim? I have been on Arvs since 2009-2014 then restarted in 2016. I have been going through worst side effects and decided to just take Bactrim as the side effects are bearable.. Will the Bactrim still be as efficient in increasing my CD4 without the Arvs or is it only effective with the Arvs
Hello and thanks for posting.
Sorry to learn about your health challenges. I'd hesitate to say that it's ok to only take Bactim (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole). While Bactrim is recommended for people living with HIV whose CD4 count is below 200 (to prevent pneumonia and brain infections), alone will not suppress HIV and shouldn't in anyway be compared to ART. In this light, Bactrim won't protect your CD4 cells.
The real issue is communicating your side effect difficulties with your healthcare provider- explore modern treatment options and combinations, with the hope of improving on whatever might be the issue for you.
I hope that this is helpful,
