HIV & EBV - What's the risk?

Question

Hi, I was diagnosed HIV + (Subtype B) in Sept 07, my latest labs are; CD4 714 (29%), VL 19,855. I have also been infected with EBV & have read that EBV can increase the risk of certain cancers in HIV infected individuals. Is this true & what is the level of risk? Thank you.

Answer

The risk is minimal. Almost everyone has been exposed to and infected with EBV, a type of herpes virus, and we don't see significant numbers of EBV-associated malignancies.
