high potassium level in blood count

Question

had a recent blood work done and it should a high level of potassium, doctor called and said to come back in for another blood test real soon.?

Answer

A high level of potassium in the blood (depending on the level) could be very harmful unless diagnosed and treated quickly. This could also be as a result of the actual blood draw itself. Sometimes if the tourniquet is on too tight when the blood is being drawn, this can result in red blood cells being destroyed and releasing potassium into the blood tube, resulting in a false positive high potassium level.
