Hep C infectious if someone has "cleared" the infection?

Question

Hi, so once someone has "cleared" a Hep C infection, are they still contagious? I called the cdc and the rep there could not find the answer. What do you think? Thanks.

Answer

Once a person has cleared hepatitis C, either through treatment leading to cure, or spontaneously ( without medication) which may occur in up to 25% of people within the first 6 months of a new infection, the infection is gone. There is no virus to spread. The person is not contagious.

Remember that after cure or after the body clears hep C on its own during the acute ( new) phase of infection, we can catch hepatitis C again. If this occurs, there is a new infection and yes this can be spread.
