hep b surface antibody and hep b surface antigen.

Question

I have a question i have my patient health summary and on it it says hepatitis b surface antibody and beside that it says reactive abnormal and then below that is says hepatitis b surface antigen and beside that it says nonreactive so the question here would be why does the one say reactive abnormal could you tell me what that means?????

Answer

These are good results, indicating that you do not have hepatitis B virus infection but have protection against hepatitis B. The surface antigen being reactive is the test result indicating infection, and the surface antibody being reactive indicates protection against hepatitis B.
