healthcare risk after exposure

Question

I sent a question yesterday regarding my risk after getting splashed in the eye with lidocaine while injecting with very little blood, and getting splashed with blood on a 3-4 day old cut on my hand. However, I forgot to ask a question, sorry. I just wanted to know how worried I should be about HIV and hep C exposure? There is very little on the internet especially about old cuts. If the cut was closed (no burning with alcohol or active bleeding) shouldn't my risk be very low?

Answer

Hi,

If the cut was closed, your HCV- and HIV-acquisition risk would be essentially nonexistent. The risk is associated with "non-intact" skin. You can download a copy of the revised guidelines for evaluation and treatment of occupational HIV exposure at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5409a1.htm.

Be well.
