Hawaiians Protest Name of "Hula" STD Information App

KITV.com reported that Ramin Bastani, CEO of a Los Angeles-based company and founder of the STD information app "Hula," does not intend to change the app's name in spite of a petition from the Native Hawaiian community. He explained that he now understands why the term "getting lei'd" was culturally insensitive and immediately removed any reference to it when a Native Hawaiian health expert brought it to his attention. Bastani claims that from what he has learned about the Hawaiian culture, the hula dance is meant to transfer information to the next generation. Subsequently, he believes this purpose blends with that of his company, which is to provide access to health information.
