Hair growth product with some herb extracts. Applied to scalp. Interactions with arvs?

Question

Hi. I want to buy a product for hair growth. It has minoxydil and some herbal extracts like saw palmetto. Its a lotion that is applied directly to the scalp. Can this product have some interaction with arvs? Im on atripla. I read that saw palmetto can interact with the pill, but Im not sure in this case since the product is applied to the scalp, not ingested. Thanks a lot.

Answer

You should be OK with efavirenz and topical saw palmetto (would inform your HIV provider so that she/he can monitor for unanticipated interaction). Data supporting claim that topical saw palmetto can result in hair growth is unimpressive. KH
