Question

Hey Nelson -

Just wondering if you have heard about this green coffee bean craze for losing weight and controlling your sugar spikes and carb cravings? Saw something on Dr. Oz saying that its packed with antioxidants and its better for you that regular coffee beans... and can be found in supplements... are you aware of any risks or bad interactions with hiv meds? Im on Atripla a year now, tcells 635, vl - undetectable for about 6 months now....As always, thank you! Hope you are doing well!

Answer

I used to like watching Dr Oz until he started going a little nuts with the "cure of the day" craze. This new way to increase ratings is taking away respect from his show. He is still great at what he does, but I wish he went back to talking about proven health options, or at least say that there is limited data for claims he often makes.

Green coffee bean seems to be enriched with chorogenic acid.

There is very limited data from small studies that showed that instant coffee enriched with chlorogenic acid induced a reduction in the absorption of glucose of 6.9% compared with the control. The investigators concluded that chlorogenic acid enriched instant coffee appears to have a significant effect on the absorption and utilization of glucose from the diet. This effect, if the coffee is used for an extended time, may result in reduced body mass and body fat when compared with the use of normal instant coffee.

No interaction studies have been performed of chlorogenic acid and HIV medications.
