false negative syphilis test

Question

Dear Dr, is it harder to detect syphilis in a patient who has been HIV+ for 20 plus years and is very unwell. Also has type one diabetes and other med conditions.

Are there any syphilis tests that can guarantee a correct diagnosis in an AIDS patient who is immunodeficient.

If the patient does have syphilis, they would have contracted it more than twenty years ago.

I appreciate any information you can offer.

Answer

Syphilis EIA antibody tests, along with confirmatory treponemal antibody tests, can detect syphilis in someone with HIV infection for 20 years, even with immune deficiency.
