First of all, a big thank you to the fabulous work you do on this site. I'm sure it really helps a lot of people and it's great that people like you are taking the time to inform all of us about HIV/safe sex. I'm a huge fan of you! You also should consider to become a writer/comedian because you've got a great sense of humour and it's always a joy to read your replies. Maybe it's a good idea to compile the most interesting, most absurd and funniest questions in an HIV/safe sex education book and raise money for your wonderful foundation selling it. You have the ability to explain something cleary and with lots of humour so it would be a must read for everyone and your book should definitely be required reading in every high school.
Secondly my questions. HIV has a window period of 3 months, but I was wondering if taking vitamine suppliments alongside a normal diet has any effect on the window period. In other words can taking vitamines shorten or prolong your window period? I was also wondering if a normal HIV test detects HIV-2 antibodies and if the window period for HIV-2 is 3 months as well. Thanks for your time to read my questions and I hope you can find a moment to answer them, but I understand you receive lots of questions and have to make a selection. Keep up the great work and give my best regards to your amazing boyfriend!
Greetings all the way from Belgium!
Hello Belgium Guy,
Can you imagine me being required reading in every high school? I can just see the teachers now "OK kids, your required reading assignments tonight are Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Act 1; Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, chapters 4 and 5; and Frascino, chapter 69, "Everything you wanted to know about oral sex but were afraid to ask."
Sure, if anyone out there wants to compile their favorite, most interesting, most absurd, and funniest Dr. Bob questions and answers and send it to me, I'll be happy to forward it on. But I doubt you'll be seeing it in Catholic schools anytime soon (unless they hire "The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence" to teach the course!).
As for your questions:
1.Vitamin supplements will not affect HIV testing or the duration of the window period.
2.Some HIV tests can detect HIV-2 as well as HIV-1. It all depends on which test is ordered.
3.Yes, the same window period applies to both HIV-1 and HIV-2.
Lastly, I absolutely agree: Steve is an amazing boyfriend. (Actually we passed the boyfriend stage over a decade ago.) And I'll not only give him your best, but I'll give him my best as well.
