eGFR

Question

I started meds 10 months ago with Tivicay and Truvada. For several years, my eGFR was 97-110. And it was at the level this summer. In September I switched to Descovy. I had my first labs on the new med done about a month later. My eGFR was 84.

The normal range on the lab is >59. I thought that was odd, since that would usually mean something wrong. Anyway, I thought it was strange to get this first drop after switching to the safer Descovy. I know I will just have to wait and see if this is a trend, but just curious your thoughts. I was not on Truvada that long.

Answer

Although you don't indicate what your serum creatinine and BUN have been and are now, hard to know what this small decrease in eGFR represents, which is still well within the normal range, since that would be unusual to see with the new formulation of tenofovir which has much less effect on the kidneys. I don't think there is anything to do at this time and I would suggest continuing your current regimen.
