Was there any case the medications didn't work?

Question

Was there any case the medications didn't work? I know there are so many types of medicines for HIV. But i heard some pills don't work with some people sometimes. So i wanna know if there was any case that all the medicine for hiv didn't work for a person. Can you explain me about this?

Answer

Hello and thanks for posting.

It's uncommon for HIV medications not to work. This can happen because of viral reasons (transmitted drug resistance), side effects or toxicity of the medications, suboptimal adherence (the goal should be greater than ~90% of doses) or problems in the drug supply chain (such as stock outs, ability to pay for medications).

Properly selected and monitored, HIV medications are safe, suppress the virus and prevent disease, death and new infections. Treatment failure with drug resistance is becoming much less common, especially with newer medication regimens.
