I have blood in Saliva, worried

Question

Hi Dr. Henry,

I am HIV+, diganosed 3 months ago, infected maybe around 2 years ago.

I have blood in Saliva since 2 weeks every mourning when I wake up. Doesn't seem normal to me, but two months ago the chest X-ray was good. I just stopped cigarettes, could this be the reason? I am not drinking, not using drugs, eating healthy.

Thanks

Answer

Blood in saliva often would be due to gum or other oral condition/infection. I would recommend seeing your HIV specialist and/or a dentist/ENT specialist for evaluation. Stopping cigarettes would not cause bleeding in the mouth but there there is increased risk for gingivitis and/or oral cancers that needs to be followed up with.KH
