bites and hbv transmission

Question

Are bites an efficient means of transmission of hbv because they are deep puncture wounds into the blood stream? Is that why you say that saliva per se, even if it comes into contact with abraded skin (but not openly bleeding) does not pose a big risk?

Answer

Even bites are not an efficient means of transmission since there are few documented cases in the literature. However, yes - a puncture wound would certainly be necessary to increase the risk of transmission.
