Nancer LeMoins:

Nancer LeMoins can scarcely remember a time when she hasn't been obsessed with creating art. "Pretty much all I do now in my life relates to art, in one way or another," she says. Born and raised in St. Louis, Mo., Nancer received her B.A. after studying art at Washington State University.

"Pretty much all of the work I do is socially relevant, and some of it is outright political," Nancer explains -- including "Free Yr Demons," a silkscreen work she created in 2000. In discussing the work, which appears in Visual AIDS' 2001 Positively Art Calendar, Nancer says, "I just got so tired of seeing my friends politely discussing their anger and frustration. I did this piece to say: 'Hey, stand up. Yell! Express yourself! It's a part of being alive!'"

Nancer is presently concentrating on printmaking, but she likes working in many different mediums. "Paintings are always floating to the surface of my brain," she admits.

Nancer tested positive for HIV in 1986, and since then has had better times and worse times. "This past year has been the hardest one yet," she says, "one thing after another, and it is really making art that keeps me alive. I have too much to do not to go on."
