John Lathram, Untitled, 1998
Untitled, 1998
John Lathram
acrylic on glass, 36" x 28"

From the artist: "In 1998 I was in a coma for three weeks due to an allergic reaction to Bactrim," Lathram says. "I had to relearn walking, thinking and making art." This self-portrait -- a reverse painting on glass -- represents "a period when I was trying to quit smoking, give up sugar and meat and cleanse myself."

Why we chose this piece: We were intrigued by the primitiveness of this piece, achieved through the use of bold colors and free-form imagery.
