Visual AIDS, a non-profit organization working to promote AIDS awareness through contemporary visual art, seeks motivated interns and/or volunteers.

Located in the heart of the Chelsea art district, Visual AIDS is a small organization with an illustrious history. Visual AIDS has evolved into an arts organization with a two-pronged mission: 1) In collaboration with museums, galleries, artists, schools, and AIDS service organizations, Visual AIDS produces exhibitions, publications, and events utilizing visual art to spread the message AIDS IS NOT OVER. 2) Through the Frank Moore Archive Project, the largest slide library of work by artists living with HIV and the estates of artists who have died of AIDS, Visual AIDS historicizes the contributions of visual artists with HIV while supporting their ability to continue making art and furthering their professional careers.

Internship and volunteer duties include:

  • Managing the Archive Project, updating files, archiving data, labeling slides and assisting members.
  • Organizing preparation of monthly Web galleries: scanning slides, formatting images (Photoshop), assisting curators and documenting information.
  • Web projects: researching and updating Web pages.
  • Researching opportunities and information for newsletter.
  • Assisting with our Artists Materials Grant Program and researching art supply donations.
  • Administrative support: fielding phone inquiries, database management, mailings and publicity.
  • Assisting with upcoming events, exhibitions and benefits.
  • Photographers may also assist in the photo-documentation of work.
  • Additional work may be developed based on specific interests and experience.

Qualifications: We seek self-starters capable of working both independently and collaboratively. Knowledge of Photoshop, FileMaker, and MS Word is helpful. Interest or background in art, HIV/AIDS, archival work, and non-profit management is a plus. Interns and volunteers work directly with the Executive Director and Assistant Director. Time commitment is negotiable. Travel cost may be reimbursed. Internships are unpaid.
