The Visual AIDS Vanguard Awards, VAVAs, recognize the achievements and contributions of people who embody the culture and purpose of Visual AIDS. These are people working with visual art to promote HIV/AIDS advocacy; people who come from the community that formed Visual AIDS and other art-based activist groups; and people instrumental in the support, critique, and evolution of our mission. The Bill Olander Award is a VAVA presented to an artist or arts worker living with HIV, and is named for the late New Museum curator and co-founder of Visual AIDS.
