Bodies of Resistance was the first major contemporary art exhibition in ten years to reconsider the AIDS pandemic in the United States and to position it in relation to representations of the body and disease in different cultures. More importantly, it is the first significant art initiative to explore the massive impact of the virus globally, and the complex relationships between the West and the developing world regarding AIDS.
Thirteen new works were produced for the exhibition by artists based in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States including artists originally from Canada, Cuba, Hong Kong, India, and Nigeria. In addition to the art works, the catalogue examines social, political and medical aspects of the worldwide AIDS pandemic with critical commentary by respected writers from the international arts and AIDS communities.
Bodies of Resistance catalogues are available from Visual AIDS.
