Lightbox: A Traveling Exhibition
Visual AIDS has launched a new initiative to provide greater exposure of the Archive Project and its member artists to a wide range of communities. Curated by members of the Visual AIDS Board of Directors, Stefanie Nagorka and Sur Rodney (Sur), Lightbox: A Traveling Exhibition includes all member artists with work documented in our slide files.
Each Archive member artist is represented in a set of wall-mounted lightboxes by two slides documenting their artwork. In this way, Lightbox displays literally hundreds of artworks in a relatively small space and the whole exhibit can easily travel. The exhibit will be updated as new members join the Archive and as new work by existing members is documented. The Montclair Art Museum in Montclair, New Jersey, hosted the first showing of Lightbox. It was on display there from November 28 to December 14, 2000, in recognition of World AIDS Day. Lightbox is funded in part, by Pfizer, Incorporated. Lightbox: A Traveling Exhibition is available to schools, community organizations, galleries, or any other public venue. If you would like to host a Lightbox exhibition or know someone who might, please contact Visual AIDS. visaids@earthlink.net
Lightbox is currently on display at the Robeson Art Gallery at the Newark campus of Rutgers -- The State University of New Jersey until January 28, 2001. The gallery is located at the Robeson Campus Center, 350 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Newark, NJ. For information, gallery hours and directions, visit
http://rutgers-newark.rutgers.edu/occ/robesonart.htm
In addition to the slide display, this exhibition features artworks by 26 Archive artists, including: Barton Lidice Benes, Bern Boyle, Luis Carle, Peter Cherone, Michael Colgan, William Cullum, John Dugdale, Alex Greenfield, Edgard Guanipa, Jerry Hotten, Leslie Kaliades, Doug Kenny, Nancer LeMoins, Joseph Magliaro, Joyce McDonald, Preston McGovern, Ricardo Morin, Mike Parker, Carlos Perez, Tara Popick, Joseph Stabilito, Ferenc Suto, Richard Treitner, Nora Wallower, David Wojnarowicz and Martin Wong. Visit the December Web Gallery to view some of the artwork http://www.thebody.com/visualaids/web_gallery/nagorka_sur/statement.html

World AIDS Day
December 1, World AIDS Day, has always been a busy time for Visual AIDS and its members - and this year was no exception. In addition to Lightbox, there were many exhibitions featuring Archive artists. Visual AIDS artists and staff spoke and participated in numerous other events. The day ended with an informal reception co-hosted by Artists Space in SoHo. Our thanks to all the artists that gave their time and talent -- and to all the institutions that continued the tradition of A Day Without Art in commemoration of World AIDS Day.

Craft Emergency Relief Fund Grant
Visual AIDS is pleased to announce that it has received a generous grant from the Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF), a non-profit organization which provides immediate support to crafts people suffering career threatening emergencies. (For more information on CERF and its services, visit: www.craftemergency.org. The CERF grant will be used to support Visual AIDS ongoing Artists Material Grant program.
Specifically, the funds will be used for grant applications in craft media, including: basketry, ceramics, enamel, fiber, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, paper, textiles, and wood. Grant requests for these materials are strongly encouraged.
To apply, simply contact Visual AIDS to request a form and then complete the application indicating which of these materials you will purchase with your grant. The same criteria apply as for any Visual AIDS Materials Grant: you must be a member of the Archive Project and demonstrate financial need; you may receive no more than two Material Grants in one year; and priority is given to first time applicants.

Postcards from the EdgeThe third annual Postcards from the Edge benefit show and sale, held November 5, was the most successful yet! More artists and buyers participated, and we raised over $11,000. Thanks again to the more than 300 artists who donated work and to Andrew Kreps for letting us use his gallery for the event. A special thanks to all the people who braved a cold, gloomy day, stood in line, bought art, and supported Visual AIDS.
