Steed Taylor

Steed Taylor is making a road tattoo for the City of New York in Riverside Park at 105th Street and he needs help. At about 500 feet long, it will be a big and bold piece of public art. The installation will take five days to complete, from May 1-5, 8 am to 6 pm daily. For more information about this project, details about his road tattoos or to schedule some time to volunteer, contact Steed directly at steed@steedtaylor.com. If you know someone who might be interested in helping out, please feel free to forward this request. Steed is happy to get any and all help you can offer.

Alberto Velasco presented his artwork at the American Folk Art Museum on December 1, 2005 to the La Guardia High School of the Arts creative writing students, led by English teacher Karyn Kay. Velasco shared his life experiences with the students including his upbringing as a Mexican/Pima Indian, being raised in California, living in New York since 1987, and his receiving of positive test results for HIV the same year. Velasco discussed how his art reflects these experiences and his emotions through a variety of media including his photo-realistic color renderings. The students then returned to school and were asked to draw on this experience and respond through creative writing. On April 12, Alberto Velasco and the La Guardia class meet again at the Folk Art Museum where the students read the poems that they wrote. A small publication was also printed.

Barton Lidice Benes took part in the panel discussion titled The Artist as Collector at PaceWildenstein on Wednesday, April 19, 2006. The panel was hosted by the Art Dealers Association of America, and also included artists Jane Hammond, David Levinthal and Ursula von Rydingsvard, with art critic Amei Wallach acting as moderator.

Luis Carle, artist, curator of the Nuyorican Poets Café and founder of O.P.Art (Organization of Puerto Rican Artists) is working with the MoMA Library on it's survey of Archives of Latino and Latin American Art. Founded in 1993, O.P. Art is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and promotion of Puerto Rican artists internationally. O.P.Art organizes exhibitions and advises its members on matters related to exhibitions, conferences, workshops and scholarships. The archival records of O.P. Art are comprised of correspondence, grant files, minutes and press clippings related to exhibitions organized by the group in Puerto Rico as well as in the United States. This archive also documents the participation of some Puerto Rican artist members of O.P.Art in the AIDS awareness movement. The Museum of Modern Art Library has been conducting a survey of archives of Latino and Latin American visual arts in New York. The aim is to survey and inventory the archival holdings of galleries, museums, grassroots organizations and research centers containing research material on U.S.-born Latino and Latin American visual artists living in New York and the greater Metropolitan Area. The immediate goal of the survey is to establish a network of Latino and Latin American art archives and to provide information about these archives. For more information visit www.op-art.org or www.moma.org/research/library/latinosurvey/index.html.

VII Gay Games: Chicago 2006

Brent Nicholson Earle, artist and founder of American Run for the End of AIDS, is working with The International Rainbow Memorial Run in organizing a series of events to bring the Rainbow Flag as a symbolic "torch" from San Francisco around the world in 2006 to Gay Games VII in Chicago. These events include memorial runs with the Rainbow Flag, displays of memorial Quilts historically linked to the Gay Games, receptions and rallies focused on remembrance, AIDS and breast cancer prevention, and promotion of Gay Games VII in Chicago from 15 July to 22 July, 2006. The International Rainbow Memorial Run is a collaborative effort involving many organizations and individuals around the world. The New York leg of the Rainbow Run will take place on June 18th with a gathering from 1:30 to 2:30 PM, at Christopher Park (Sheridan Square at the intersection of Christopher Street/W. 4th Street/7th Avenue) and a run from there at 2:30 PM east on W. 4th Street and then up 6th Avenue to W. 42nd St./Bryant Park and the Pride Rally. A new Signature Square will be unfolded in Christopher Park and an opportunity provided for memorials to be left. Participation in the planning and execution of this series of events is welcomed. For more information, contact the Federation of Gay Games www.gaygames.org / info@gaygames.org or American Run for the End of AIDS (AREA) AmerRunEndAIDS@aol.com.

Sunil Gupta and Isaac Julien's newly released portfolio of selected photographs from Looking for Langston will be exhibited at Metro Pictures from April 15–May 20, 2006. The black and white photographs were taken by Gupta during the filming of Julien's acclaimed 1989 film Looking for Langston and are being exhibited for the first time. The individual images are evocative, richly detailed works that articulate the strikingly crafted visual qualities of the film. A video presentation of Looking for Langston will also be on view. The 26-image portfolio sets a high standard for photographs that parallel film projects -- they are intense renderings of the visual components that might be missed in a filmic image. Gupta's photographs capture key elements and nuances of Julien's film production, including the staging, lighting, iconography and choreography. Metro Pictures is located at 519 West 24th St., New York. www.metropicturesgallery.com.
