Dr. Rupert Whitaker has lived with HIV for over 27 years: in 1982, he co-founded the Terrence
Higgins Trust in memory of his partner, which is now Europe’s leading HIV charity.
Subsequently, he trained in psychiatry and immunology in the UK, Canada, and the USA. He retired
after a serious stroke but researches in the fields of behavioural medicine and chronic illness
care, with honorary university appointments in London, UK, and California, USA. He has a particular
interest in the challenges of long-term HIV.
