Until recently, we thought we had a handle on the ways in which hepatitis C (HCV) is transmitted. Most often people contract HCV through sharing equipment when injecting drugs. There are a number of other ways it can be passed on, each involving contact with blood that carries the virus.

However, HCV wasn't thought to be a sexually transmitted infection (STI). That's changed as doctors have looked into a growing number of cases among HIV-positive gay men, most of whom didn't report other risk factors. Here, we examine the different risks associated with sexual transmission of HCV.
