Survey Examines Asian-American Men's Attitudes Toward Reproductive Health

February 18, 2000

The National Asian Women's Health Organization (NAWHO) surveyed 802 Asian-American men between the ages of 18 and 65 regarding their reproductive health attitudes and practices.

Findings include:

  • 87% of Asian-American men are sexually active.

  • 89% of Asian-American men have never seen a health care provider for information about family planning or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

  • Over 83% of Asian-American men feel they are not at risk for HIV.

  • 80% of Asian-American men feel they are not at risk for any STD.

  • 79% of Asian-American men support public funding for reproductive health services.

The findings suggest that, while Asian-American men are sexually active, an alarming number think that they are not at risk for STDs and have never seen a reproductive health care provider. This behavior places them, their partners, and their families at greater risk. NAWHO recommends that public health policies and programs need to target Asian-American men, and educate them on STD and HIV awareness.
