Christine and Cheryl met in a support group for women "recently
diagnosed with HIV". What they had in common was the
virus -- little else. They became fast allies in the
effort to stay well and to educate kids. Christine would
say about HIV, "Get to know it before it gets to know you".
Cheryl would quietly talk about her husband, Dick, dead after
a long battle with AIDS. She'd express her worry about
her own health and talk like a mother to kids who she felt needed
guidance and love.
