On the day before his first surgery, Eddie spoke casually about the
changes that would take place in his life from that day on. If he was frightened,
he kept it to himself. He talked about his deep concern for his parents
and the heightened appreciation he felt for life-which he cherished deeply.
Eddie liked his slight growth of beard because it made him look thinner.
Later, there were times when Eddie joked about not needing to grow his beard
anymore. He was acknowledging his fear about continuing to lose weight.
