Bertram H. Schaffner, M.D., -- a highly respected, openly gay psychiatrist known for helping to get the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, and for being among the first psychiatrists to treat people with HIV/AIDS in the United States -- died on January 29, 2010, at the age of 97.
