What Is Hepatitis? Hepatitis means an inflammation, or swelling, of the liver. Viruses can cause hepatitis. Alcohol, drugs (including prescription medications), or poisons can also cause hepatitis. So can opportunistic infections such as Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC, see Fact Sheet 514 ) or Cytomegalovirus (CMV, see Fact Sheet 504 ). Hepatitis is a very common disease. I suspect that in light of the risk you describe, that your testing for HIV is adequate and that testing for HCV and HBV is not necessary. Continue to use condoms as you are doing and limit your exposure to high risk partners.Dr. McGovern... Read more »
