HIV Can Replicate in Intestinal Lining Even After HAART Reduces Viral Load, Study Says

HIV can replicate and suppress the immune system in the intestinal lining, even after blood tests show that highly active antiretroviral therapy is reducing viral loads, according to a study published in the August issue of the Journal of Virology ... Read more »

HIV Replication and Persistence in T Follicular Helper Cells

Following up on the recent post on T follicular helper cells(TFH) , a study published on December 17th in the Journal of Experimental Medicine reports that TFH represent a major site of HIV replication andpersistence. The finding is not... Read more »

Suppression of Human Protein Reduces HIV's Ability to Enter T Cells, Replicate, Study Finds

Researchers have found that suppressing the human protein ITK in CD4+ T cells reduces HIV's ability to enter the cells and replicate, according to an NIH study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , Reuters ... Read more »

Viral fitness and replication capacity

what's replication capacity and how can this be tested? Has this become an important part of HIV care? Can you explain. I have been infected with HIV for 15 years and have been on many regimens. Would it be helpful for my doctor and me to have...

Relication capacity is a test used for research purposes and available from ViroLogics in San Francisco. To my knowledge, it can only be ordered as part of a research protocol. The test compares the ability of the virus you are carrying to replicate... Read more »

lymphocytes and viral replication

1)In the context of HIV/HepC co-infection, can T cells be lost without the HIV virus replicating? Or is it the replication itself that depletes the T cells?2)If the HIV virus is replicating, is there always a detectable viral burden in serum, or a...

Response from Barbara McGovern, M.D.

Most, but not all, T cell destruction is by HIV itself. In HIV/HCV patients some studies suggest that T cell responses to HIV medicines are not as good as in HIV patients without Hepatitis C. Some have wondered whether chronic hepatitis C may be a... Read more »

Stopping viral load replication

When first diagnosed 3 years ago my viral load was in the hundred thousands, I believe it was 7 hundred thousand. According to this particular strain, I had been infected for 13 years before detection. Immediately started on sustiva and...

This is a very good question. The best antiretroviral therapy lowers the plasma viral load - which is really a test of the amount of HIV RNA in the blood - by 3-5 logs, i.e. it reduced your viral load from 750,000 to 75,000 (one log) to 7,500 (two... Read more »

Viral Replication

I am confused about viral replication. The current antiretiroviral drugs prevent replication. However, when the meds are stopped is the virus still present in the infected cell and able to start replicating again?...

Yes to both questions. The current antiretroviral drugs are 'static' drugs, i.e. they don't kill the virus, but they do prevent replication. Fortunately, the consequences of stopping replication are prolonged length of life and a... Read more »

See,I told you HIV replicates a cell's DNA TO RNA

The below is plagerized from Gallant ( the guru!)
I know that the present antiretroviral medications do not actually kill the virus.
However, if the medications inhibit the virus from reproducing, doesn't the virus die

Replicate....

The HIV virus replicates 9log10 or 10log10(1000 000 000 or 1000 000 0000) each day. So the estimation of virus are 1000 000 000 New virus each day! so why shouldnt your body respond against so much virus? Get a grip virus replication starts nearly... Read more »
