What Is Hepatitis? Hepatitis means an inflammation, or swelling, of the liver. Viruses can cause hepatitis. Alcohol, drugs (including prescription medications), or poisons can also cause hepatitis. So can opportunistic infections such as Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC, see Fact Sheet 514 ) or Cytomegalovirus (CMV, see Fact Sheet 504 ). Hepatitis is a very common disease. It can affect people even if their immune systems are healthy....

There is no correlation between time of infection and viral load. There is only a weak correlation between viral load and liver damage or progression of liver disease.... Read more »

There is no correlation between HCV viral load and liver damage. Unfortunately it is not helpful. Liver biopsy is the only way to see the amount of damage in the liver. The viral load is one of the predictors of response to treatment. If the viral... Read more »
